This area focuses on aspects of personal,
social, moral and spiritual development, including the understanding of self
and others. The curriculum should encourage respect for people of other culture
and beliefs teach children to share, take turns, understand right from wrong
and show a range of feelings such as joy and sorrow. They must also learn to
demonstrate independence in dressing, personal hygiene and selecting activities
and resources.
This section covers important aspects of
language development, providing a foundation for literacy. Children should
listen and respond to stories, songs, nursery rhymes and poems and take part in
role-play. They may begin to associate sounds with patterns in rhymes,
recognise letters by shape and sound and begin to communicate learning through writing.
