Reading and Writing Beginners:
Reading and Writing in English
It is
important for you to have a little background knowledge about the teaching
method we feel will benefit these children (and all beginning readers) best.
This will explain the terms used in the daily schedule we developed.
Teaching Method:
Throughout our teachers educational
career, they have studied a large variety of techniques
used to teach children
how to read and write.
The Four Block
Model was
developed to meet the diverse needs of children.
This model focuses on four different techniques which are integrated to
maximize student achievement and success.
Below are the four techniques and a little information about each one:
Guided Reading:
In guided reading, the
teacher selects a book to read to and with the students. At the beginner level, the teacher would
select a very easy read predictable "big book".
These books have repetitive phrases and rhyming words. The students can usually predict the story
ending. These books are important to
build confidence in reading and students begin to recognize high frequency
words and repetitive phrases. Guided
reading also teaches children how to read for comprehension.

Writing Block:
The
writing block is obviously the block that focuses on writing.
The importance of this block is to teach
children how to write.
This is
accomplished by starting at the very beginning.
Only the children who can already write the ABC's both capital and lowercase
can join this model.
From
here you have short writing of word exercises.
This time is also used to show children the value of written
expression. Allow the students to write
things they feel are important in their own life. It might be their name during the beginning,
or a short note with inventive spelling.
For some children, the first words they read are there own writing!
Self-Selective Reading:
This
block is just as important as the others.
Children should be encouraged to read things that are interesting to
them. In the beginning, most children
will read books that are familiar to them (a small version of the "big
book"). This is common because the
children begin to recognize those repetitive verses and can read them on their
own. As more guided reading occurs, the
more onsets and rimes children begin to learn.
Eventually they select new books to read.
What is very important is that books are
available in our group that the children can read!
Easy
reading books!
Otherwise,
they would become discouraged and feel they will never be able to read.
Working with Words:
This block is used to focus
on activities with the new words they are learning
